PP-ETS – Evaluating Exposure to Secondhand Tobacco Smoke in Leisure Public Places in Cluj-Napoca 2008
The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the in-force territorial public policy regulating tobacco consumption in public places in randomly selected central locations in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a known human carcinogen, being classified as the second most common human exposure to carcinogen after sun exposure. ETS has severe consequences on public health, and it is a known cause of disease in the non smoking population. Public locations, such as cafés, pubs, and restaurants, are some of the spaces in which individuals are exposed to ETS. An exploratory, mixed methods observational research design, with the scope of identifying environmental tobacco smoke exposure patterns in Cluj-Napoca cafes was employed. Data was collected by trained undergraduate students, through a total 28 observations, with a minimum of 45 minutes per observation.
Specific objectives:
– to assess the implementation of current policy (law 349/2002 regarding tobacco regulation)
– to compare smoking and non-smoking areas in regards to offered services and facilities.
