DISCIPLE 2.1 – International Students’ Conference on Public Health

Description:

If you are a student and Public Health is one of your main interests, you must check out Disciple 2.1 – The first International Students’ Conference in Public Health organized by the Public Health Students’ Association Romania. The emphasis is going to be on ”Building your soft skills”, more precisely, on presentation skills, public speaking and team management. Our aim is to help students improve their skills and to encourage them to form connections with future specialists from all around the world. The conference will take place in Cluj County, Romania, 13-16th of October.

Disciple 2.1 has two components. First of all, a conference which aims to tackle some of  the most important topics from the health sector, such as public health, reproductive health and human rights regarding health. The second component is a training consisting of multiple sessions as it follows: public speaking and presentation skills, team management and public health theatre workshop.

 Conference Sessions

Public Health

The facilitator for these sessions is Karolina Ivanciuc, a dedicated and active student at Cluj School of Public Health and also the devoted president of the Public Health Students’ Association Romania.

The definition of health, according to the World Health Organisation, is physical, mental and social well-being, not just merely the absence of the disease. Public Health aims to prevent the occurance of diseases, to promote health and prolong life.

During these sessions, major topics such as mental health, lifestyle (noncommunicable) diseases and health inequities will be discussed. Emphasize will be put on the correct identification of risk factors which can negatively impact on health. Brainstorming will be highly encouraged as our aim is to exchange experiences and ideas in order to address these issues more effectively.

The sessions will take place in an engaging and energic environment with plenty of both fun and challenging activities.

Reproductive Health

Alexandru Marian Grozăvescu is an active member of SSMT (Timisoara Medical Students Society), and for the past two years has been National Coordinator on Sexual and Reproductive Health including HIV/AIDS (NORA) within FASMR (Romanian Federation of Medical Students Associations).  He will engage us to prepare and talk about the most recent and actual problems of today`s society and how, we as future healthcare providers, can be the pillars for creating a better environment by  putting an end to all of that. As the biggest problem nowadays is stigmatization and discrimination, we will try to focus on 4 major areas meaning Gender Based Violence, Sexuality and Gender Identity, Comprehensive Sexual Education and last but not least the most common and frequent HIV and other STI`s.  We will focus on these main areas especially because we believe that having the proper knowledge and baggage of information we can fight against pregnancies at a younger age, we can prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections including HIV, and can understand better those who are around us, thus creating a future free of stigmatization and discrimination.

Human Rights and Peace

Mădălina-Cristina Șoancă is a dedicated medical student at ”Transylvania” University in Brașov, Romania and also a very proud and enthusiastic volunteer at the Brașov Medical Students’ Asociation (ASSM – Asociația Științifică a Studenților Mediciniști Brașoveni).

One of her biggest passions is nature in its rawest form; believing it is full of wonders. Besides that though, she wouldn’t imagine the world, this beautiful chaotic world, without the people. She is more passionate about the people, their ideas, behaviours and ways of communication.  ”Some really smart people with more power of will and passion, about almost 70 years ago, thought it was a good idea to put all social, economical and cultural norms together and create what we now call ”Universal Declaration of Human Rights ”.„

We now look at it as the foundation of peace and equality in the world. We will discuss together matters which concern different aspects of this famous but maybe not so known document and topics as such.

Public Speaking and Presenting Skills

In their book, John Capecci and Timothy Cage are stating that “A recent survey of Top Five Fears places public speaking alongside “identity theft” and “mass shootings.” In the 1980s, it completed with “nuclear destruction.” In the 1970s, “shark attack.”

Well, we have great news!

Public speaking is a learnable skill and we are confident that by taking part in our sessions you will get to know the most important strategies to become a better speaker and presenter.

These sessions are designed to show you the importance of Public speaking & Presentation skills building and to boost your self-confidence. As mastering these skills can create opportunities for you, help advance in your career or be a great leader, we find them to be some of the must-have competences of every health-care specialist.

Therefore, the sessions will address the most important aspects that need to be considered when developing a presentation and delivering a speech. Starting from the basics such as how to structure your presentation, how to formulate good entries and prepare props, body language and dress code, to even more interesting aspects such as how to deal with the fear of public speaking, myths, mistakes and how to choose a suitable soundtrack, all these elements that are of utmost importance will be covered.

When thinking that good presentations and public speaking skills can open doors, think also that poor ones can close them. Thus, we encourage you take advantage of this opportunity and join us for a great learning experience!

Team Management

Try to think of at least one of the first team projects you ever did in the beginning of your Bachelor’s studies. We probably all know the following scenario: people who did nothing, a lot of miscommunication, stress, even some argues. Most definitely over time things got better because you found out the people you can work with. What will happen though when you are put to work with new people? In the real world you can’t really choose your team colleagues, can you?

When it comes to being a Public Health specialist, teamwork is an absolute skill that each professional should master. No matter if we are talking about research, applying for a grant, doing health needs assessment, implementing programs, monitoring and evaluating them, all have one thing in common; working together in a team where each member has its own specialization and his own role in a team.

There is one key person that can guarantee the success of the team: the team leader.

Setting direction, building an inspiring vision, or creating something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team or an organization. We will map together what a true leader should look like, what competences does a leader need and what a leader’s “job description” looks like.

If you don’t recognize yourself as team leader, by the end of our time spent together you will be able to know what qualities qualify you as one, what are your weaknesses and most importantly how you can overcome them in order to be the pillar of support for your team. Even so, leadership can’t be mastered overnight; practice and perseverance are the key stones in achieving this skill.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

• Develop working relationships.
• Motivate your team and improve morale and skills.
• Encourage participation.
• Build individual and team performance.
• Link your team’s performance to organizational goals.

Theatre Workshop

Theatre played a major role as public health communication medium.  In the last years theatre  became increasingly popular and effective as a way of educating the public about the general health issue (Dougall & P. Stanley Yoder, 1998)

Encouraging people to work with fiction enables them to be more conscious about the everyday risk factors, which can impact their health status. Through a combination of theatre improvisation workshops, participants can build educational performances using theatre exercises focused on relevant public health and social issues. Performers will use drama, comedy, music or dance to deliver public health messages in an interactive and attractive manner.
